Grey and depressing outside, super-slick and internationally-to-date inside: is the Crowne Plaza perhaps a metaphor for something Bratislavan? Never mind. This giant packs in the expense-account crowd with swanky facilities like a new restaurant serving Kobe beef and sushi. Its upscale neutral rooms are sophisticated and timeless.

Was there a listening device planted in the flower vase? A key stashed in the housekeeper's medicine cabinet? Who knows how many state secrets were sought, or trysts consummated in the former Hotel Forum - it just seemed like that kind of place. Today all that remains of the old guard institution is the concrete block exterior. In 2005 ICH Hotel Group bought it, spiffed it way up, and renamed it. Once inside the ultra-modern lobby with its English-speaking staff, 'amenity' becomes the buzz word. Three restaurants, two bars, a casino, a night club, a fitness centre, pools, a business centre, shops, concierge levels - you name it. But most services cost extra. At these prices, they could throw in breakfast at least.
