The Quill information
Statia's landmark dormant volcano, the Quill (derived from the Dutch word for pit or hole) soars 1972ft (601m) above the island's rolling terrain. It was designated a national park in 1998 and is the most popular hiking destination. From the trailhead at the end of Rosemary Laan in Oranjestad (a cab ride from the airport is US$10, from town US$8), it takes about 45 minutes to ascend the moderately steep but densely canopied trail to the crater rim.
There's a viewpoint down into the jungly crater, but for close-ups you need to continue down a very steep and slippery half-mile trail to the bottom. There are two other trails heading north and south of the rim, but these are very rough and steep and should not be attempted without a guide.
