Bugis St Market
Once Singapore's most infamous sleaze pit, now its largest street market, filled with cheap clothes, shoes, accessories, manicurists, food stalls and, in a nod to its past, a sex shop. You'll even find (gasp) the occasional knock-off.

Cathay Cineleisure Orchard Rd
Specialising in teen fashion, junk food, with a cinema and possibly the worst escalator layout on earth.
-
Da Paolo Gastronomia
Top-notch deli and the perfect place to fuel up for a shopping jaunt around Holland Village. Grab your pick of the excellent gourmet pizzas, salads, desserts, dips, breads, sandwiches, then score one of the bench tables along the pavement for a picnic.

Indian Candys
There are dozens of great Indian sweet shops in Little India, but we like this one because of the bad spelling and the grumpy old fellas behind the counter (though if you're pretty and female they may suddenly get a spring in their step).

Jones The Grocer
Australian posh-nosh store and bistro dedicated to high-end edibles. Wildly popular with expats, it's worth visiting for its superbly smelly cheese room, though some of the produce is a rip-off (we noted a 300% markup on tins of ghee readily available in local supermarkets).

Khan Mohamed Bhoy & Sons
Follow your nose to what may be the last traditional spice-grinding shop in Singapore. Plastic garbage bins full of dried bell chillies crowd the doorway, while inside you can take away big scoops of turmeric, cumin and fennel or order them freshly ground.

Mustafa Centre
A Singapore legend, as much cultural rite of passage as shopping experience, Mustafa's narrow aisles and tiny nooks have everything from electronics, clothing, toiletries, tacky clothes (lurid Bollywood shirts always make great presents), cheap DVDs, gold, money changers, a supermarket (it's the place to stock up on Indian spices and pickles) and sometimes half the population of Singapore.

Paragon
Classy, classy, classy: Givenchy, Ralph Lauren, YSL, Hugo Boss, Versace, Gucci, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Prada and people who love them. Great basement food selection.
-
Plaza Singapura
Conveniently located on top of the Dhoby Ghaut MRT station and the North East MRT-line interchange, Plaza Singapura was Singapore's first multistorey mall, and is as popular as it is vast. This massive place features a 10-screen Golden Village cineplex, fashion and music. Check out the French Carrefour supermarket in the basement for a wide selection of imported cheeses, wines and an impressive range of gourmet treats.

Supernature
Supernature is Singapore's best organic deli. Their shelves are heaving with chemical- and gluten-free veggies, groceries, baby food, wine and meats. They also do a roaring trade in organic coffee and take-away juices (try the predictably green 'Incredible Hulk').

Swiss Butchery
This is the place to come to satisfy those sausage and steak cravings. They also have a small range of sauces and a few groceries to complement the flesh frenzy.
-
Tanglin Mall
Expat haven (check the crowds of wives at Caffé Beviamo) with an excellent gourmet supermarket, shops for mothers and midrange boutiques.
-
Vivocity
Staggeringly large, the waterfront Vivocity megamall is Singapore's largest, and offers a viable alternative to pavement pounding on Orchard Rd, though its broad, squat design (by Japanese architect Toyo Ito) means there's still a prodigious amount of walking to do.

Yue Hwa Chinese Products
This five-storey department store stocks everything Chinese, from porcelain teapots and jade jewellery to slinky silk cheongsams, dried fish and medicinal herbs/fungi/spices. Pick up some ginseng, a snakeskin drum or a jar full of seahorses for the road.
