Jones the Grocer
This rather trendy deli also serves up a decent feed. Or is it a restaurant with a full-service deli? It’s hard to tell, as Jones has craftily blended the two into a beautiful high-ceilinged, airy space. The cheese room is a delight, as is the open-faced wagyu burger. The espresso-based coffees are top-notch too.

Patissier
Tucked behind a rather grand doorway, this modest little shop produces masterpieces of cake-design sold whole or by the slice, attracting streams of office women, who line up and coo over the display cabinet. It’s closed on Saturday and Sunday, but the Mohamed Sultan Rd branch is open weekends if the cravings get too strong.

Khan Mohamed Bhoy & Sons
Follow your nose to what may be the last traditional spice-grinding shop in Singapore. Bins full of dried bell-chillies crowd the doorway, while inside you can take away big scoops of turmeric, cumin and fennel or order them freshly ground – though standing around and staring and not buying anything is not appreciated.

Home’s Favourite Cookies & Durian
If the flavour and smell of durian has bewitched you (and admittedly that’s a sizeable ‘if’), then this little bakery will be heaven for you. Durian cookies, durian pastries, durian cheesecake…as the name suggests, this is the home of all things sweet and smelly.

Supernature
Supernature is Singapore's best organic deli. Their shelves are heaving with chemical- and gluten-free veggies, groceries, baby food, wine and meats. They also do a roaring trade in organic coffee and take-away juices (try the predictably green 'Incredible Hulk').

Kim Choo Kueh Chang
Joo Chiat is stuffed with bakeries and desserts, but Kim Choo retains that old-world atmosphere, selling its traditional pineapple tarts and other gaudy Peranakan desserts from a wooden counter that looks more like an apothecary’s shop.

Da Paolo Gastronomia
Have your travelling companion nab one of the precious few stone stables outside while you nip inside this deli for gourmet-topped pizza slices, black-truffle tagliatelle and made-to-order sandwiches.

Going strong for more than 70 years, Tong Heng is arguably Singapore’s most popular place for egg tarts and other tempting cakes and cookies.
