Lonely Planet review for Café Iguana

Finding good Mexican in Singapore is like looking for El Dorado, but if you're itching for fajitas and nachos, this breezy riverside place just might be your city of gold. The margarita jugs kick like a mule.

    Lively and fun atmosphere

    papanesz recommends this,

This place is always full at weekends. Guven the number of places to eat in this part of Singapore, that is as good a compliment as you can get.

It is a fun place with a lively atmosphere. The food is typical Mexican and they allegedly have over 100 different varIeties of tequila! Great place for a group of friends to start the evening before heading on for late night entertainment.

    Cafe Iguana for every occasion

    ainaid recommends this,

I’ve been a patron of this restaurant for years; it's my favorite Mexican food restaurant in Singapore. Look for the low slung, woody and colorful bistro just off Clarke Quay, by the Riverside Point. On the weekends Cafe Iguana is packed. It's not unusual to have a 90-minute wait on a Friday night. The lunch crowd during the weekend is thick, but the food arrives so fast diners are able to get in and out fairly quickly.
No one really minds the wait. Simply order a margarita from the bar. The tables are tightly packed and you may find yourself, especially after a margarita or two, making friends with the people around you - this is perfectly normal at Cafe Iguana.
A margarita will set you back only $7 during happy hours and two of these tasty, frothy drinks will undoubtedly put you in a great place. There are beers by the bottle and on tap (handcrafted by Brewerkz) and wine, all well-priced, but it’s the margaritas that keep people coming back. The café is complete with decorative plants, paintings, empty tequila bottles, and wooden pieces. I don’t think a lot of money has been spent on its cosmetic renovations. But why would they? People keep coming and enjoying the place just the way it is.
Order a margarita and get warm tortilla chips and a small bowl of spicy salsa on the house. My usual is the red snapper burrito smothered in green chili with a side of cilantro rice or beans. Sometimes if I’m really hungry I’ll order a taco salad, but on those visits I walk away too full. The menu includes all the usual Mexican fare - the green chili is fabulous. Food always arrives fast and hot.
We enjoy taking out-of-town guests to Cafe Iguana. The prices are great and the atmosphere is ideal for chatter and laughter. I recommend Cafe Iguana for lunch or dinner, as a fun casual date, night out with the family or a gathering of friends. Be prepared for a wait on most evenings, but with margarita-in-hand, who cares!

A Taste of Mexico, without a Huge Hole in the Pocket

The whole of Marina-Suntec area was closed for the F1 Night Race last weekend, as such, everyone flocked down to Clarke Quay/ Boat Quay/ Riverside Walk etc. for dinner instead. It was a madhouse crowd of people.

Unable to counter our pre-matured hunger, some of us went straight for the menu and placed our orders. For 3 persons, we got ourselves a Portobello Fajitas, Grilled Chicken Fajitas & Shredded Steak Burritos.

We were completely wow-ed by the Fajitas!! Talk about sizzling hot!! The oil was still popping around on the hotplate!! Although the ‘brown bean’ sauce was missing, but coupled with salsa sauce etc., the fajitas were really good!! A little disappointing was perhaps, coz we were eating while waiting for other colleagues to arrive, the flour tortilla wraps cooled too quickly and hardened a little. =(

Oh boy, I absolutely loved the Portobello, but unfortunately the portion was a little small. The Grilled Chicken had sufficient flavour but after cooling a little, it got a little tough for chewing as well.

One big charmer of the evening was the Shredded Steak Burritos. Absolute worth of your money, with hefty servings of shredded steak!! Coupled with lime-scented cilantro rice, borracho beans and cheddar mozzarella, it was absolutely fabulous!! After the Fajitas, we were actually pretty stuffed, but with such a wonderful serving in front of us, we completed the dish with satisfaction.

A pretty pleasant visit, despite visiting washrooms, which were way too cramped, thus making it a complete hazard for head injuries. Sitting outside saved us from having to shout at each other too much and one will get to enjoy the full view (almost) of Clarke Quay and a part of Singapore River, especially since the River Festival was running last weekend, it was quite a sight to see the river boats dolled up.

Definitely one Mexican restaurant with an affordable price range, with good food and preventing a hole in the pocket.
