In a leafy oasis atop sleepy Duxton Hill, past a row of sleazy KTV bars, this welcoming bistro has friendly staff, bentwood chairs, ceiling fans and a wall of wine and cookbooks. The menu is typically modern with dishes such as lamb loin, steaks and risottos.

Adjectives struggle to describe the jaw-dropping views from this 70th-floor restaurant. Soaring ceilings, Asiatic wall hangings and plush fabrics are mere backdrops. The view rates a 10, the food a little less. Book early for a window seat.

Seven on Club
One of the newer Club St restaurants, Seven exudes class and has been attracting the area’s affluent professionals in droves. The alfresco area is a bit too close to the main road for comfort during early evening peak hour, so head inside or wait til the traffic dies down. The Mediterranean dishes, like swordfish belly, are excellent and its set lunches and dinners are good value.

Gordon Grill
With its old military club atmosphere, complete with ‘family’ portraits, and its famed steaks, the Gordon Grill is an olde worlde oasis in the middle of ultramodern Orchard Rd. It’s as much an experience as it is a meal, so it’s worth splashing out on the wagyu, ordered by weight.

Doc Cheng’s
Decked out with curtained booths, high ceilings, soft lighting and chequered tiles, Doc Cheng’s has a discreetly colonial air. The food, however, is decidedly modern fusion. ‘Son-in-law’ egg starter is surprisingly successful, as are dishes like the tandoori trout.

Crowded with weird furniture and second-hand gas masks, telephones and abacuses, CAN Café is a remedy for Singaporean rigidity. Twenty-somethings smoke, chug jugs of beers and munch pizzas, noodles, cakes and curries. Music drifts from jazz to trance.

Unappealing office-block views fail to deter romantic couples here, gazing into each other's eyes over sharp-edged tablecloths and weathered floorboards. The fare is meaty - the veal cheek cooked in red wine and orange reduction is a standout.

Lobsters on ice, baskets of Tabasco Sauce bottles, glazed wine cool-rooms, floor-to-ceiling windows and six open kitchens so you can watch the flames under your wok - there's plenty to look at, and plenty of suits doing the looking.
