Au Jardin Les Amis
It's not difficult to see why it comes at the top of many food lists. Combine a dreamy Botanic Gardens setting with traditional French fare (frogs legs, pate de fois gras and truffles) with interlopers such as tiramisu and Iranian caviar. Bookings are essential.

Erich's Wuerstelstand
An eccentric Austrian hawking very low-priced sausages and sauerkraut from a stall in Chinatown - it's hardly a surprise this place has achieved a certain fame. And deservedly so: what could be better than a hearty sausage and beer (from across the lane) after a hot day in the city? Check out the German and Austrian breads and hearty Central European meals at his Backstube and Imbiss outlets opposite.

Fosters
Fosters is Australian beer and the staff here are Chinese, but they manage to conjure up some decent Brit pub food (steaks, pork sausages, fish and chips, steak and mushroom pie etc) without the annoying olde-worlde interior design. The leafy outdoor deck is great for a pint.

French Stall
Set up by two-star Michelin chef Xavier Le Henaff to debunk the notion that French food must be expensive, this unpretentious stall is a gem - great food, great desserts and great wine in a coffeeshop environment.
-
Garibaldi
Swish, sequestered Garibaldi is about as Italian as Singapore gets: Italian chefs, 250 different Italian wines and debonair Italian staff. The menu is classico; try the antipasti, then inhale the homemade tortellini di zucca (pumpkin tortellini with sage butter, raisins and nutmeg).

Il Lido
Thoroughly outstanding Italian restaurant, with mouth-watering views across the Strait of Singapore, Il Lido screams out for a special occasion and the best outfit in the wardrobe. Offers modern, classic and vegetarian menus, plus one of the best wine lists in the city. Oh, and there's a yacht for private-dining occasions, a snip at around S$30 for dinner.

L'Angelus
A decidedly cosy and unstuffy French bistro famed for its escargot and chocolate cake. If it's a rainy night, tuck into the warming, incredibly filling cassoulet (bean stew with meat and sausage) washed down with a glass of something red and robust.

Michelangelo's
Michelangelo's offers an artistic selection of pastas (the penne vodka in a creamy orange sauce is the signature dish) and salads. Choose between the fan-cooled streetside terrace, or the romantic dining room with its Sistine Chapel-esque ceiling efforts.
-
Original Sin
It must be pretty rare for a purely vegetarian restaurant to have so many ardent carnivorous admirers, but Original Sin's superb creations on an oft-changing menu, coupled with its long wine list and relaxed atmosphere devoid of preciousness have won many meat eaters over - if only temporarily.
-
Pasta Brava
This discreet back-street bistro is the place for fabulous homemade pasta. Every table has a white paper sheet over the table cloth and a basket of chalks - doodle away, and if they like your work, it'll get pinned on the wall.

Saint Pierre
Saint Pierre serves ultramodern French in a minimalist setting, jazzy tunes resonating around walls covered in alphabetised lists of French cooking ingredients. Try the pan-fried foie gras (goose-liver pâté) with green apples and port sauce, or the excellent two- or four-course set lunches.
-
Sebastien's
Cosy, relaxed French bistro with a genial eponymous owner, serving up commendable classics such as boeuf bourguignon (pot-roast beef in red wine) and escargot (snails) baked in mushrooms, plus an outstanding collection of cheeses.

Senso
There are hundreds of Italian restaurants in Singapore, but none can beat this restaurant in a former school for romantic atmosphere. Book a table in the courtyard under the stars for maximum effect (and hope it doesn't rain).
