Monteverde Cheese Factory
Until the upswing in ecotourism, Monteverde’s number-one employer was this cheese factory. Started in 1953 by Monteverde’s original Quaker settlers, the factory produces everything from a creamy Gouda to a very nice sharp, white cheddar, sold all over the country, as well as other dairy products such as yogurt and, most importantly, ice cream. Reservations are required for the two-hour tour of the factory.

Kresty Prison
Kresty is St Petersburg’s main holding prison; if you’re busted here, Kresty’s where they take you to await whatever it is that awaits you. You wouldn’t want to find out: conditions are much better now than when the prison was at its most crowded, but it is still hardly a pleasant place. Kresty is the oldest working prison in Russia, built in 1892. Tours visit the holding areas, the grounds and a small museum. This definitely constitutes a unique day out in the city. You will have a chance to see the six-bunk cells and the frightening solitary-confinement closets. Inmates are on site – working, walking or peeking out at you through slats in their cells. Guests are advised…

Guided Tour, University of Sydney
Australia’s oldest tertiary territory (1850), the University of Sydney has over 45,000 students and even boasts its own postcode. You don’t need to have a PhD to grab a free campus map and wander around. Flanked by two grand halls, the Quadrangle has a Gothic Revival design that tips its mortarboard towards the stately colleges of Oxford. If you want to be sure you’ll see the innards of the usually locked Great Hall, take a guided tour.

Gaviota
Habana’s Jardín Botánico Nacional (National Botanical Garden), situated 20km south of the city, is notoriously inaccessible by public transportation, and Gaviota’s organized trip is the easiest way to get there. The standard package (CUC$19) includes transportation to the gardens, entry fee, a guided tour, and a free cocktail when you arrive. The gardens themselves are surprisingly interesting and varied.

Havanatur
All of Habana’s main travel agencies offer a Hemingway tour, and the packages are much the same. The itinerary (CUC$20) includes a visit to the author’s house La Finca Vigía, a side trip to the fishing village of Cojímar (where Papa moored his boat), plus an opportunity to down copious mojitos and daiquirís in Hemingway’s two favorite watering holes, the overhyped Bodeguita del Medio and El Floridita.
