Islands Sights

  1. Îles du Frioul

A few hundred metres west of Île d’If are the Îles du Frioul, the barren dyke-linked white-limestone islands of Ratonneau and Pomègues. Sea birds and rare plants thrive on these tiny islands (each about 2.5km long, totalling 200 hectares). Ratonneau has three beaches. Boats to Château d'If also serve the Îles du Frioul (€10 return, 35 minutes).

  2. Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Extending some 70 miles from south of Nags Head to the south end of Okracoke Island, this fragile necklace of islands remains blissfully free of overdevelopment. Natural attractions include local and migratory water birds, marshes, woodlands, dunes and miles of empty beaches. Don't miss the 156ft striped Bodie Island Lighthouse, south of Nags Head. You can't climb it, but it's darn photogenic.

  3. Nearby Islands

A quick ferry ride from Fukuoka, pretty Nokonoshima mixes natural and man-made parks. The latter, called Island Park, gets the most visitors, with a swimming beach, fields of seasonal wildflowers, huts selling crafts, and sweeping ocean views. Bicycle rental (per hour/day ¥300/1000) and English maps are available at Noko Market, by the ferry dock. Buses 300 and 301 depart frequently from Nishitetsu Tenjin bus terminal (¥360, 20 minutes) for Meinohama Municipal Ferry Port.

Ferries to delightfully rural Shikanoshima (志賀島), where fresh seafood restaurants line the harbourside streets, depart hourly (¥650, 33 minutes) from Bayside Place, along with seasonal sightseeing…

  4. Ko Nok & Ko Klui

Set halfway between Phuket and Krabi, these two islands are far enough from tour epicentres that you'll usually have them to yourself. Ko Klui, the big island north of Ko Yao Noi, has tidal access to a huge hôrng, which some call the Blue Room, and a pristine white-sand beach with plenty of hornbills and monkeys.
