1. Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park

   A Unesco World Heritage Site, this park features the ruins of structures dating back to the 14th century, roughly the same time as the better-known kingdom of Sukhothai. Kamphaeng Phet's Buddhist monuments continued to be built until the Ayuthaya period, nearly 200 years later, and thus possess elements of both Sukhothai and Ayuthaya styles, resulting in a school of Buddhist art quite unlike anywhere else in Thailand.

   The park has two distinct parts; an inclusive ticket (150B) allows entry to both areas. The old city is surrounded by a wall (the 'Diamond Gate' of the city's name) and was formerly inhabited by monks of the gamavasi ('living in the community') sect. This…

   Fort William Historical Park

   French voyageurs, Scottish gentlemen and Ojibwe scuttle about while re-enacting life in the early 1800s at this historical park. From 1803 to 1821, Fort William was the headquarters of the North West Company. Eventually the business was absorbed by the Hudson Bay Company and the region's importance as a trading center declined. Today, the large heritage center offers 42 historic buildings stuffed with entertaining and antiquated props like muskets, pelts and birch-bark canoes.

3. Ska-Nah-Doht Village & Museum

   Re-creating a 1000-year-old Iroquois longhouse community, Ska-Nah-Doht Iroquoian Village & Museum is 32km west of London. Village structures are encircled by a maze; the museum contains artifacts thousands of years old and recounts the area's history. Outside the walls are First Nations crops and burial platforms. Meandering park trails are open until dusk. From London, take Hwy 402 to interchange 86 then follow Hwy 2 west.

4. Fanshawe Pioneer Village

   Explore London's history at the 30-building Fanshawe Pioneer Village on the eastern edge of town. Costumed blacksmiths, farmers and craftspeople carry out their duties in true 19th-century pioneer-village style.

   At the adjoining Fanshawe Conservation Area you can swim, walk and camp.
