   The closest thing to a spiaggia (beach) is the pleasant sandy stretch at the harbour at Marina Grande; if you want to just loll in the sun, nearby jetties sport the ubiquitous umbrellas and deckchairs. While it’s far smaller than the island of Procida in the Bay of Naples, this former fishing district has a glimmer of similarity with its pastel-coloured houses, brightly painted boats and fishermen mending nets.

   There are some earthy seafood restaurants here as well, serving fish from the morning’s catch.

2. B Map

   Vieux Port

   Immediately south of Terra Vecchia is the Vieux Port (Old Port), Bastia's most picturesque area, ringed by pastel-coloured tenements and buzzy brasseries, as well as the twin-towered Église St-Jean Baptiste. The best views of the harbour are from the hillside park of Jardin Romieu, reached via a twisting staircase from the waterfront.

   Porticciolo

   Once home to the area's fishing fleet, Mergellina's marina is now a crowd-pulling combo of anchored yachts and kitsch Neapolitan chalets, neon-lit seaside gelaterie and bars. Pick up an ice-cream brioche at Chalet Ciro Mergellina and soak up the postcard view of the castello (castle) and volcano.

   From here, opt for a lazy passeggiata (stroll) eastward along the car-free lungomare (seafront), or, if you don't mind the incline, head southwest along Via Posillipo for enchanting vistas of the bay, the city and lushly gardened villas.

   St Katharine Docks

   The gateway to the warehouse district of Wapping, built in 1828 after 1250 ‘insanitary’ houses were razed and 11,300 people made homeless, the dock’s current incarnation – a marina for luxury yachts surrounded by cafes, restaurants and twee shops – dates from the 1980s. It’s the perfect starting point for exploring Wapping and Limehouse.

5. Kaohsiung Harbour

   The opening of the harbour to the public is still a work in progress, but down by Pier 12 (the Love Pier), Gushan Ferry Pier (渡船站) and Fisherman's Wharf (高雄港漁人碼頭; Gāoxióng Gǎng Yúrén Mǎtóu) you'll find walkways, bike paths, cafes and beer gardens. Check at the train station visitor centre about harbour cruises.

   The Pier-2 Art District (駁二藝術特區; Bóèr Yìshù Tèqū) is an old warehouse area that was renovated into art studios (following European and North American examples of similar urban-regeneration projects). Exhibitions and concerts are frequently held indoors and out. Check at the visitor centre for a schedule of events.
