Labuan War Memorial
The Labuan War Memorial is an expanse of lawn with row upon row of headstones dedicated to the nearly 4000 Commonwealth servicemen, mostly Australian and British, who lost their lives in Borneo during WWII. The most heartbreaking are the last two rows of memorials on the north end that read merely 'a soldier'. The cemetery is near the golf course, about 2km east of town along Jln Tanjung Purun. A taxi to the memorial will cost around RM10.

Île du Grand Bé
At low tide, cross the beach to walk out via the Porte des Bés to this rocky islet, where the great St-Malo-born 18th-century writer Chateaubriand is buried. Once the tide rushes in, the causeway remains impassable for about six hours - check tide times with the tourist office. Depths can be deceptive; if you get caught out, stay on the islet until the tide subsides.

US Military Cemetery
Only planes taking off from nearby Luxembourg airport disturb the peace at the country's two main war cemeteries.
The easiest to reach and most visited is the US Military Cemetery at Hamm, 4km east of the capital. Here lie more than 5000 US war dead, including famous general George S Patton jr. Most of those buried or remembered here were killed during the US's WWII liberation of Luxembourg and the subsequent Battle of the Ardennes. Patton's headstone is easily identified among the rows of white crosses and stars, each marked with flags from the US and Luxembourg. White-stone pylons commemorate the soldiers whose bodies were never found, and enormous wall maps detail the…

‘Pompei of the North’
Four hundred buildings lie buried under the 1973 lava. On the edge of the flow is an eerie graveyard where beloved homes rest in peace. ‘Pompei of the North’ is a modern ‘archaeological’ excavation in which 10 houses are being dug up. So far, the crumpled concrete remains of four houses have been unearthed along what was formerly Suðurvegur.

Protestant Cemetery
Here on Jln Sultan Ahmad Shah, the mouldering tombs of colonial officials huddle together under a canopy of magnolia trees. Here you'll find the graves of Captain Francis Light and many others, including governors, merchants, sailors and Chinese Christians who had fled the Boxer Rebellion only to die of fever in Penang.
Also here is the tomb of Thomas Leonowens, the young officer who married Anna - the schoolmistress to the King of Siam made famous by Deborah Kerr in the King and I. The 1999 remake, Anna and the King, was filmed in Malaysia, including some scenes in Penang.

Madain Saleh
If you can only visit one place in Saudi Arabia, make it Madain Saleh, which rises up from the sands in a landscape of rare beauty. Madain Saleh is home to 131 tombs, 45 of which carry inscriptions in late Aramaic script above the doors. A permit is required but most hotels and tour operators can arrange one if you fax them your details a week in advance.
The Nabataeans, who carved the astonishing city of Petra (in Jordan) chose Madain Saleh as their second city. Although the tombs are less spectacular here than those in Petra, the landscape of sweeping sand and wonderful rock formations is stunningly beautiful. The tombs are also in an excellent state of preservation,…
