  1. Porzellan Manufaktur

Ever heard of Dresden china? Some of the most distinctive blue-and-white pottery actually comes from the nearby town of Meissen, where the famous firm of the same name still has a factory. Some 27km northwest of Dresden, Meissen is a compact, perfectly preserved old town dating back an amazing 1075 years. It’s the centre of a rich wine-growing region and makes a great day trip if you have a bit of time to spare in Dresden. The Albrechtsburg palace was the original manufacturing base when the industry was introduced by Augustus the Strong in 1710, but the Porzellan Manufaktur is now 1km southwest of the Altstadt, in an appropriately beautiful 1916 building.

The town is the site of what’s billed as ‘the largest underground marble quarry in the world.’ Perhaps you’re in need of some marble cut to your specifications? They make everything here from bookends to chessboards to vases.
