Lonely Planet review

On an exposed headland at Aikerness, a short walk from the straggling village of Evie, you'll find the Broch of Gurness. Built around 100 BC, it's the best-preserved example of a fortified stone tower in Orkney. Surrounding it are the shells of houses, discernable by the hearths in the centre of each. The wee visitor centre helps unravel its mysteries.
