Dragonfly
A super-stylish lounge bar with a Raffles of Singapore vibe – it’s all crystal chandeliers, polished wood and oriental art – Dragonfly has won rave reviews both for its innovative cocktails and its designer decor. Grab a seat in the neat little mezzanine, from where you can look down on the bar as the Singapore Slings are being slung.

Sygn
The plush banquettes and sleek, polished tables in this sharply styled bar are just the place to pose with a passionfruit bellini or a glass of Pol Roger. The languid and laid-back atmosphere at this bar is complemented by cool tunes and superb cocktails, and the food menu is surprisingly good.

Amicus Apple
This laid-back cocktail lounge is the hippest hang-out in the New Town. The drinks menu ranges from retro classics such as Bloody Marys and mojitos, to original and unusual concoctions such as the Cuillin Martini (Tanqueray No 10 gin, Talisker malt whisky and smoked rosemary).

Bramble
One of those places that easily earns the sobriquet ‘best-kept secret’, Bramble is an unmarked cellar bar where a maze of stone and brick hideaways conceals what is arguably the city’s best cocktail bar. No beer taps, no fuss, just expertly mixed drinks.

Tonic
As cool and classy as a perfectly mixed martini, from the chic decor to the Philippe Starck bar stools, Tonic prides itself on the authenticity of its cocktails, of which there are many – the menu goes on forever.

Underdogs
A cellar furnished with stone-slab floors and a fire sale of battered, mismatched sofas and armchairs makes an unlikely setting for one of Edinburgh's best cocktail bars, but the relaxed atmosphere and friendly welcome here can't be beat. Excellent mixed drinks and some unusual bottled beers, but no brews on tap.
