Eating here is a comfortably laid-back affair – the candlelit ground-floor dining room has basketwork chairs, chunky wooden tables and modern art on bare stone walls; upstairs is brighter and more cafe-like. The menu lists bouchées (French for ‘mouthfuls’) – starter-size helpings of which you can have as many or as few as you wish – and the food is an eclectic mix of European, North African and Far Eastern influences.

    I went to Maison Bleue for a dinner with work knowing it had an ok reputation, but came away having had one of the best meals I have ever had in Edinburgh. The scallop starter was good, tasty, nothing to bowl me over but thoroughly enjoyable. The jewel in the crown came with the "chef's special" which was a cous cous and meat fest, presented on 3 plates, one with cous cous and vegetables, one with some dip in spicy sauce and one which was a platter of meat, "north African style"- sausage, chicken and a big chunk of lamb. For once in my life I would say there was nothing I could fault about this dish, the taste was fantastic and portion size floored me, maybe the first time I could ever say that! I can't remember now the cost but I still came away with change for a twenty on my maincourse, which for what I got was fantastic.
    Everyone in the group loved their meals, and many long time Edinburgh residents said it was one of best they had had in the city. Definitely one to go back to.

    A great restaurant in the centre of town

    This is one of my favourite restaurants in Edinburgh. It is on victoria street in the heart of Old town. The atmosphere upstairs is always busy but intimate. The perfect place to enjoy a long romantic meal with a loved one or a night out with a group of friends. The food has always been a high standard and the pices are about average for the kind of restaurant. The only complaint i have is the service can sometimes be a bit slow.
