    New Edinburgh Rendezvous

Edinburgh’s oldest Chinese restaurant, dating from 1956, is still one of its best. A no-frills, no-nonsense place, it offers an extensive menu of expertly prepared Cantonese and Peking dishes with classic favourites, such as shredded beef with chilli sauce and aromatic crispy duck, alongside more adventurous dishes, such as shredded sea blubber, boneless duck’s feet with mustard sauce, and pickled cabbage with chilli sauce.

    Chop Chop

Chop Chop is a Chinese restaurant with a difference, in that it serves dishes popular in China rather than Britain; as their slogan says, ‘Can a billion people be wrong?’. No sweet and sour pork here, but a range of delicious dumplings filled with pork and coriander, beef and chilli, or lamb and leek, and unusual vegetarian dishes such as aubergine fried with garlic and Chinese spices.

    Rainbow Arch

It’s always a sign of a good Chinese restaurant when you see members of the local Chinese community eating there, and you’ll see plenty of them at the Rainbow Arch. The menu is more adventurous than most – look out for deep-fried minced octopus cakes – and even the standard dishes, such as lemon chicken, are a cut above the average Chinese restaurant.
