    Maxie's Bistro

Maxie's candlelit bistro, with its cushion-lined nooks set amid stone walls and wooden beams is a pleasant enough setting for a cosy dinner, but at summer lunchtimes people queue for the outdoor tables on the terrace overlooking Victoria St. The food is dependable – Maxie's has been in the food business for more than 20 years – ranging from pastas, steaks and stir-fries to seafood platters and daily specials, and there's an excellent selection of wines.

    Café Hub

A Gothic hall beneath the Highland Tolbooth Kirk – now home to the Edinburgh Festival offices – has been transformed into this bright and breezy bistro with zingy yellow walls, cobalt-blue furniture and lots of imagination. Drop in for cake and cappuccino, or try something more filling – fish chowder with crusty bread, or vegetable chilli with corn chips and rice.

  3. C

    Outsider

This Edinburgh stalwart is known for its rainforest interior (potted ferns in atmospheric dimness) and has a brilliant menu that jumps straight in with mains such as chorizo and chickpea casserole. The Sunday brunch features DJs and hangover-busting breakfasts. Very popular, so best to book ahead.

    Urban Angel

A wholesome deli that puts the emphasis on fair-trade, organic and locally sourced produce, Urban Angel also has a delightfully informal cafe-bistro that serves all-day brunch (porridge with honey, French toast, eggs Benedict), tapas and a wide range of light, snacky meals.
