Housed in the magnificent former banking hall, with a lofty glass-domed ceiling, pillared arches and mosaic-tiled floor, the Dome boasts one of the city's most impressive dining rooms. The menu holds few surprises - from smoked salmon to char-grilled chicken or roast lamb - but it's really the setting that sells the place; it's hard to keep your eyes on your plate with all the finery that surrounds you.

Discussing with my spouse which country is best in the kitchen, I flippantly remarked it was the Scottish. Sensing his doubt I took him back to what I refer to as: 'The Holiday when we went to The Dome' We were 'Fringing' it and passed The Dome several times as it's only a caber toss from both The Royal Mile and Princes St. After a fairly heavy going multi-sensory theatre piece we decided to step inside The Dome, and seemingly another time period. On entrance you are flanked by private rooms that should be frequented by men with big brandy glasses and even bigger moustaches. Entering the bar area reveals a space of Tardis like proportions. Lounge chairs and tables invite you to drink G&Ts. The circular bar at the centre looks as though plucked from the Titanic and behind is the restaurant. I could easily spend forever describing the beautiful ornate interior but this feast for the eyes is just an aperitif for the senses. The starter puts my flippant remark about Scottish cuisine firmly in place. As always we shared- one had black pudding and goats cheese salad; the other haggis in filo pastry with whisky sauce. Both starters melted on my tongue as flavours cascaded over taste buds. It was the kind of starter that made you want to order it again for dessert. With so much to live up to, the main did surprisingly well. The duck in plum sauce with creamed potato was expertly cooked duck, and portions that satisfied rather than bloated or left us wanting more. A delicious lemon cheesecake and a cocktail for dessert meant this was not a cheap meal. But everything about it; the high ceilings, the decor and the exquisite food, made it a multi-sensory experience you won't find on the Fringe. It also places Scottish food up there, and not a battered Mars bar in sight! After recounting the memorable meal, my husband looked slightly annoyed. It turns out that: 'The Holiday when we went to The Dome' was our honeymoon. Perhaps a meal can be too memorable!?
