    Vyborg Castle

    The ancient and picturesque Vyborg Castle, built on a rock in Vyborg Bay, is the city’s oldest building, though most of it now consists of the 16th-century alterations. Inside, you can climb the tall tower and visit the small museum of local studies, as well as a few other small exhibitions.

    Round Tower

    Other relics of Vyborg’s Swedish times are found in the squat Round Tower, which now houses a restaurant; the Pantserlaks Bastion, dating from 1574, which contains a gallery; the City Hall Tower, which looks like it’s crowned with a giant metallic wizard’s hat.

  3. Park Monrepo

    A lovely place to escape the world for a few hours if not most of the day is the 180-hectare Park Monrepo. Laid out in a classical style, the sprawling park with curved bridges, arbours and sculptures, is as pretty as the grounds at Pavlovsk, only wilder.

  4. Park Monrepo Reserve

    Behind the Anna Fortress is the Park Monrepo Reserve, a massive expanse of wooded and lake-dotted parkland. Laid out in a classical style, the wild forested park is packed with curved bridges, arbours and sculptures.

    Across the bridge is the Anna Fortress, built in the 18th century as protection against the Swedes and named after Empress Anna Ivanovna although it is not open to the public.

    The Alvar Aalto Library, designed by the famous Finnish architect in 1935 and badly in need of repair, is at the Park Lenina’s southeastern end.

    Fronting onto Teatralnaya pl the blue-domed Transfiguration Cathedral built in 1787, is well maintained and attended.
