Kalmykia, Astrakhan, Volgograd, Kazakhstan Trip Report

Trip Report (recently completed) from my 2010 trip from Dagestan to Altai.

Starting in the wilderness of northern Dagestan, I drive north into Kalmykia with its striking Buddhist, Mongolian culture. Then to the cosmopolitan town of Astrakhan and further up the Volga to Volgograd (Stalingrad) and the monument complex of Mamayev Kurgan, a breathtaking piece of Soviet cult-architecture.

Onwards, north to Saratov / Engels and across into Kazakhstan and a very flat steppe journey passing Oral,…

I am planning a trip to Lake Baikal. My friend and I both want to see the turquoise ice. Anyone can advise me on the right season (or month) to see that? Will it be too late if I go from 3 May to 9 May 2015?

Thank you.

North Caucasus Trip Report - N. Ossetia, Ingushetia, Chechnya, Dagestan

Rather belatedly, a trip report with pictures of the second stage of my journey (the first is also on my website) across the North Caucasus.

I start in the beautiful scenery of North Ossetia, exploring intriguing ruins in the mountains, then head east into the tiny but rather unsettled Ingush Republic. On into Chechnya to see the reborn city of Grozny, and make a visit to the very beautiful and tranquil mountains. Then to Makhachkala on the Caspian, and a truly fascinating journey through the…

Chuysky Trakt Best Stopovers Between Mongolia and Gorno-Altaysk

We are planning yet another overland Eurasia trip next summer and plan on going from Olgi, Mongolia to Novosibirsk overland. There is a train from Biiysk on the back end to lovely Novosibirsk, my favorite city (we have been to Biisk) and the remote overland crossing to Tashanta and Koch-Agach, Russia, at the front end going from Mongolia to Russia. I believe there is transport from Koch Agach, but where are good places to stop on the way to break the 10 hours or so to Gorno-Altaysk? Is…

Prices for tickets on the trans-siberian line

Wanting to book trains in January but noticing that the prices for tickets in January on the official website rzd.ru are much more expensive, does anyone know why? Or is this because they have just gone on sale?

For example 1st class ticket on Train number 2 from Ekaterinburg to Irkutsk on 8th January is 22,000 Rubles, while a couple of weeks earlier on 18th December (and other dates) the same train is just 15,000. The same goes for Moscow to Ekaterinburg in January. Is there a reason for this…
