    Often referred to simply by its address, Free Arts Foundation is gallery central as far as modern art is concerned. There are lots of different galleries, all with different opening hours spread throughout the complex, but most are open on Saturday. Sometimes the space itself and its denizens are more intriguing than the art.

    Lots of rustic old whatnots and genuine antiques are piled into this quirky arty antique store. You might unearth anything from a battered old samovar to an intricately painted sleigh. Enquire about occasional excursions into the countryside, where most of these items are procured.

    'Liberty' may be an odd name for a gallery specialising in art of the Soviet period, but nonetheless, here it is. Exhibitions highlight art from the 1930s to the 1980s.

  5. Plyos Embassy

    Plyos is a town on the Volga River, celebrated as the inspiration for Isaak Levitan, Russia's greatest landscape artist. This little gallery acts as the town's unofficial representative in St Petersburg, exhibiting landscape paintings by local and national artists. While the work is not particularly innovative, it is indeed beautiful, capturing the most magnificent moments in the Russian countryside.

  6. Pushkinskaya 10

    Officially known as the Free Culture Society, this contemporary art mecca is guaranteed to turn up something weird and wonderful. There are lots of separate studios and galleries spread throughout the complex. On the ground level there is also a small bookshop, KultProsvet. Note that despite the name, the entrance is actually through the arch from Ligovsky pr.

    Sekunda - as in 'second-hand' - is a small bric-a-brac place where you might find an unusual souvenir, whether an old postcard or a stuffed moose head. Enter through the courtyard.

  9. St Petersburg Artist

    Dedicated to preserving and promoting the tradition of realist art, this museum and exhibition centre showcases local artists that painted from the 1950s to the 1990s. Most featured artists have been exhibited in venues as famous as the Russian Museum and Moscow's Tretyakov. The gallery also publishes the magazine St Petersburg Artist and hosts occasional concerts.
