Lonely Planet review
Occupying the pre-revolutionary home of the wealthy Yeliseyev family, the Taleon Imperial Hotel is a grand, gaudy affair where every tap is gold-plated, every towel monogrammed and every room decorated with real and reproduction antiques. The place to splurge on Sunday brunch, the Taleon Club is a voluptuous affair with as much caviar, oysters and Shampanskoye as you can guzzle. Dress smartly and take along some ID so you can be made a member for entry.
Currently hidden discreetly behind the Taleon Club casino, the hotel's boutique feel will be challenged when it adds around 100 rooms in its planned expansion into the neighbouring buildings. For now, though, enjoy the feeling of pampered exclusivity of a hotel where suites (19 of them) outnumber the regular rooms (10). All rooms have king-size beds, hydromassage baths and state of the art entertainment systems; some have lovely views across the Mokya River. There's an excellent fitness centre on the roof, while the ground-floor health spa pampers guests with a range of treatments, three types of sauna (Finnish, Russian and Turkish) and 12m swimming pool. For all the hotel's comfort and nouveau riche trappings, some might find the Eliseev's library, preserved intact from 1903, the property's most elegant attraction.
Our independent authors have visited Taleon Imperial Hotel and selected this as one of our recommended hotels in Historic Heart.
