Lonely Planet review

Although the facade gives the impression of a grand 19th-century mansion, the Rennaissance St Petersburg Baltic Hotel is a totally new building. The location of this wannabe luxury hotel is excellent, and if you bed down in one of the small suites on the 7th and 8th floors with a view of St Isaac's glittering cupola, chances are you won't be too disappointed.

The nouveaux riche-ness of the hotel's decor is jarring. The jazzily coloured shower curtains, for example, while fine for a beachside property, seem totally out of place in this elegant quarter of St Petersburg. On the plus side the rooms are generally spacious and the beds king-size. A smorgasbord of sweeteners are thrown in if you stay in a suite or bi-level suite (which certainly aren't worth the extra money). Otherwise count on shelling out for the buffet breakfast. The basement gym is quite large, open 24 hours, and includes a Finnish sauna. And it's pleasant to enjoy a drink or meal in the 6th-floor Terrace & Bar with its killer view of St Isaac's.
