Lonely Planet review
Let's cut right to the point. The key selling point of the Marshal Hotel, which occupies part of the former barracks of the Tsar's Household Cavalry, is that one of its deluxe rooms (No 9) has - wait for it - a water bed! So no complaints now if you find your bed wobbling when you lie on it.
As far as we're aware, the water bed room - which, incidentally, is quite elegantly decorated - is a unique feature among St Petersburg's hotels. Otherwise the Marshall is a professionally run business-oriented hotel with largely unremarkable but comfortable rooms of a decent size. All have adjustable air-con, fridges and wiring for high-speed internet (charged per hour). Other facilities include a sauna and Jacuzzi (charged per hour) and a conference room. Breakfast is included in the rates and the staff on reception are helpful and polite. The location, not greatly convenient for most of the city's central sights, is nonetheless close to Neva and not too far from the metro. The exterior was undergoing restoration when we visited.
Our independent authors have visited Marshal Hotel and selected this as one of our recommended hotels in Smolny & Vosstaniya.
