Hi Everyone, I flew into Sochi and went up to Kazan and across to the Altai Mountains in Siberia. It took about a month. I slept using Couchsurfing, Airbnb and booking.com, mostly, and traveled with Blablacar, train, bus, marshrutka, and hitchhiking (the last bit to the Mongolia border.) I made two blog posts about it: the first has details of how to deal with these choices, including ATM machines and registering after arrival, and the second is to show the great time I had. I am looking forward…

Hi everyone!
I'm about to move to St Petersburg as a teacher with a legit work visa and all that that entails. A cousin of mine, 16 years old, is studying on exchange in Belgium for the year and would like to come and visit me in Russia in a few months. I've done a bit of research on the visa types and I'm wondering whether the tourist visa route and a fairly generic agent issued invitation letter would do the trick in her case? I don't know what the deal is with her being a minor. The private…

As per the title, I'm planning on being in Blagoveshchensk later this year, and wanted to know if I need a Chinese visa to visit Heihe for a day trip? I seem to remember that there was visa-free travel, just for Heihe?

I hold UK and EU passports.

Thanks!

I am planning on a one-day trip but am concerned about transportation connections. The РЖД shows an early morning train from Irkutsk to Baikal with a 3 hour layover in Slyudyanka that arrives Baikal around 14:30 (Moscow time) = 19:30 local time. This appears to be after the last ferry leaves for Listvyanka. First question, does the ferry wait for the train or would I spend the night in Baikal rather than Listvyanka. Once I cross the river, what are my options to return to Irkutsk. Would…

As I get deeper into the details of my upcoming trip, I am beginning to have more questions. I understand the concept of left-luggage and plan to use it often on visits to a town where I will not sleep overnight. The Lonely Planet Trans-Siberian guidebook indicates that some stations have electronic lockers and others have a staffed office. In the larger cities which is more common? Will a backpack fit in a locker if the largest dimension is 29 inches (74 cm)? If there is an office is it…

Hello everyone.

Me and my girlfriend are going to Russia on the Trans-Siberian Railway on the 1st of August!
Please tell me your thoughts about this trip itinerary.

We are not sure about stopping in Krasnoyarsk because we only have two days (one night) and we are affraid about that this would not be enough time to do a "good" hiking at stolby. What do you think? Maybe we could skip Krasnoiarsk and sleep in Suzdal, Ekaterimburg, Novosibirsk or Baikal zone one more night?

Thank you for any…
