Using APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) in Russia for leisure travel?

Holders of ABTC cleared for Russia can travel around Russia visa-free for 90 days. The ABTC is officially meant for business travellers. Has anyone has travelled around Russia as a leisure traveller using the ABTC? Would one be asked to show proof of business dealings or contacts when one enters Russia without a visa but possessing a ABTC cleared for Russia?

Trans-Siberian Railway

Planning to do the rail trip from Beijing to Moscow and Saint Petersburg, departing Beijing in December with stopovers in Ulan-Bator, Irkutsk, Novosibirsk and Yekaterinburg.

Most of the books/websites ( incl. LPTT) offer advice and suggested itineraries for trips in the "warmer" months but there's not much information for winter travelers, particularly regarding available activities at the enroute stops. If any TTers have done this trip in winter, I'd appreciate any advice and/or suggestions re…

Leather shopping in Moscow & St Petersburg

I have seen that leather clothing is quite popular among Russians, and was wondering if they were locally made? Can somebody suggest where I can find leather clothing for women, especially, trousers/leggings and jackets? Both genuine leather and faux leather? I want to purchase such items for a mate and would like to know the approximate costs, so that I can give her an estimate....perhaps, you can let me know about certain shopping centres or shops or sites, or name of some department stores…

Moscow and St. Petersburg itinerary and general questions

Dear people, hello!
I know that there are many threads about this - I used them all to try to build my itinerary, but still had to come here ask for help.
I'm travelling to Russia with my brother in February. I'm 25, he's 21. We have a fast pace and visit things quickly, especially because we're not into spending hours inside a museum reading everything. We like to explore :)

Please take a look in the itinerary. I'm all open for suggestions!
Here it is:…

Grand Express Train from Moscow to St. Petersburg

Hi -

Some basic Q's here - need to book a cabin for my husband and I overnight from Moscow to St. Petersburg on the Grand Express train:

There seem to be many sites to book (russiantrains.com, russianrail.com, grandexpress.ru) - seems like rates are the same across all. Does anyone have a recommendation or reason why I should use one particular site?

I want to book the "Grand Cabin", which accommodates two people. Sounds weird - but since one cabin is for 2, do I choose just "one seat"…

Criminal Record

I will be applying for a single entry tourist visa in the next week or so for a trip to Moscow with my girlfriend. I have a criminal record for an offense from 4 years ago, the charge is police assault. Is the Russian consulate able to check up on my CRB? when I've had visas before from countries in South America or Asia I've simply ticked "no" if the question came up and never had any problems but something tells me Russia might delve a bit deeper. I feel that if I answer yes and give…

Train #6 from Ulan Ude to Ulaanbaatar

Hi,
I am planning to take train #6 from Ulan Ude to Ulaanbaatar on coming Dec 28. I have a couple of simple questions:

I could not reserved tickets online on the rzd website. Is it risky to buy in the station just a day in advance? (as far as I know, winter should not be peak season?) How punctuate the train is? The schedule says it arrives at around 6am the next morning.

Thanks for your help.

Buying tickets independantly for Trans-Siberian

OK, in a nutshell, what is the best way to buy train tickets for trips outside of Russia not through an agent?

I am buying my internal tickets for the Russian legs of the Trans-siberian through rzd.ru but they don't allow purchase for trains going outside of Russia, so how do I do this?

Can I buy tickets at Irkutsk station for Irkutsk-Ulanbator and then can I buy a ticket at Ulan-Bator onto Beijing? Or are there agents online for these legs that just charge a small amount?

new visa rules?

Hello,
I live in the Netherlands, and got the Russia visa here two years ago. I now visit the website of the Russia consulate, and they seem to have changed the rules and added documents we need to hand in.

It says that I need an "invitation" from the foreign police OVIR. I think this is the invitation foreigners always needed in order to get a visa, right? You can get it fast on websites like waytorussia.com.

But then it also says that* on top of that* I need a "hotel voucher" or a…
