Hello

I am planning the Transiberian railway for this summer (July, in particular). I am looking at the timetable of the man in the seat 61:
http://www.seat61.com/Trans-Siberian.htm#Trans-Siberian_timetable
in the eastbound direction, and I am looking in particular at the leg Irkutsk-Ulan Ude-Ulaanbataar. I see that there is a daily train (362b) that goes from Irkutsk to Ulaanbaatar. I am using RealRussia to double-check, and it confirms:

if I search for the leg…

Dear all,

I'm new here and I'm struggling with a question which nobody seems to solve. Before I will jump into to the question I explain the situation a bit.

So last Christmas I've met my Ukrainian girlfriend via Instagram when I was in Ljubljana, Slovenia. We met each other for the first time when we went to Saint Petersburg last March. Since she's going to graduate in a few weeks, I'm coming to her this May in Rostov-on-Don.

I've booked a hostel for 6 nights (14th of May till the 20th of…

I want to apply for a Visa to Russia, but I keep finding conflicting information online.
Can someone please tell me the cost of a single entry visa to Russia for American Citizens? I only want to visit Russia for a month.
Also, is there a website or an agency you can recommend for finding a sponsor for that length of time?
Lastly, I am currently travelling Eastern Europe. Do I need to visit a Russian Embassy after I apply online or is it everything handled online?
If yes, how long does the process…

Hi all,
A few months from now I'll be flying to Domodedovo Airport. I will arrive at midnight and i will be flying out the same airport the very next noon.
Can anybody recommend a low cost hotel or guest house near Domodedovo Airport which counts with a reliable shuttle service? Last thing I want is to weather delightful Russian taxi drivers upon arrival after quite a long journey.
Many thanks in advance,

I'm in the planning of an epic adventure, driving from east coast Russia to Norway. Endless searching of the world wide web has given me lots of information but i am still in need of some answers and tips, therefore i come to you!

I have set up 2 potential starting point's of the trip, the "easy" way out being Vladivostok. The more interesting and thrilling start point would be Magadan. The plan from starting point is to buy an old Russian car (hopefully a UAZ 452) and start driving west. Any…

I am visiting St. Petersburg from May 1st to 5th, and it would be nice if I can visit Kizhi Island as well. But it seems that the boat to Kizhi Island is available only after mid of May. Is there any boat company operating from the beginning of May?

I wanted to share a few tips with fellow travellers re. booking tickets on the Russian Railways web portal.

http://eng.rzd.ru/

There is no need to go via a travel agency (their mark-up will be 15% to 40% from what I have seen, perhaps more).

You can buy the tickets on line as you would in the UK or USA using a standard VISA credit card. I have been using my Barclaycard. I don't think the web site takes American cards or AMEX cards (there is not enough space to input all the digits that an…

I have read about the need to register when you arrive at a hotel and the Russia Lonely Planet guidebook talks about it. It is not entirely clear to me what this entails. I will be arriving in Vladivostok where I will be staying in a rented apartment and I wonder whether they will register me or not...

1 Is registration compulsory every time you stay somewhere -- anywhere -- or does it only apply to the 1st town or city you reach in Russia? I mean: is it repeated every time you stay overnight…

I will be in Russia for 4 weeks in June (travelling from Vladivostok to Moscow by train). I have heard and read various things about the security aspect. Some people and guidebooks say it is pretty safe, others that you have to be careful, also on the trains. Any feedback will be appreciated. I am wondering about the following:-

1 Is Vladivostok worse than other parts of Russia? A Latvian girl I know was saying to me that it is the Wild East and like the rest of Russia in the 1990s. Is that the…
