You can buy air and train tickets at Intra (724 611; ul Ulyanovoy 9; 8am-1pm & 2-7pm). There's another train ticket office in the Hotel Spasskaya.

The Vologda airline(790 733, 793 232; at airport; www.vologda.ru/~avia) flies to/from Moscow Vnukovo (R2040, 1¼ hours) on Tuesday and Thursday, and to/from Veliky Ustyug (R890, one hour) about four times a month.

From the train station(720 643; pl Babushkina 8) there are at least seven daily trains to Moscow (R560 to R1080, seven to nine hours), three or more to St Petersburg (R630 to R1220, 12 to 13 hours), two or more to Arkhangelsk (R615 to R820, 14 to 15 hours) and four or more to Kotlas (R800 to R1000, 12 to 13 hours). A train to Murmansk (R1290 to R1580, 37 hours) leaves on even dates (daily during some summer periods).

The bus station(750 452; pl Babushkina 10) has services to Petrozavodsk (R469, 12 hours) at 8.10am four days a week, Veliky Ustyug (R391, 10 hours) at 9.15am daily and 7am Wednesday and Thursday, and Yaroslavl (R183, five hours) at 2.20pm daily.
