Land

Bus

From the bus station (722 013; ul Chapaeva 3) buses leave for St Petersburg (R270, nine hours, once or twice daily) and Vologda (R469, 12 hours, four days a week). To Sortavala there are marshrutky (R250, four hours, 8am and 3.45pm) and a bus (R178, five hours, 3pm) via Kolatselga, and a marshrutka (R300, 6.30am) and a bus (R241, 4.30pm) on the longer, seven-hour route via Olonets, all leaving from the bus station. For the marshrutky it's advisable to book ahead and this may need to be done by phone: if necessary get your hotel to call the bus station.

Train

Ticket windows at the station(765 743; pl Gagarina 1) are open 24 hours. At least four trains run daily to/from St Petersburg (R470 to R625, seven to 8½ hours) and Moscow (R900 to R1140, 15 to 20 hours), and at least six to/from Murmansk (R925 to R1235, 20 to 24 hours) via Kem (R510 to R625, nine hours) and Kandalaksha (R770 to R940, 14 hours).

Air

From Besovets airport (764 566), 19km northwest of the centre, Severstal flies to/from Helsinki (R8515, 1½ hours one-way) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and Aeroflot-Nord flies to/from Arkhangelsk (R3600, one hour) on Sunday from about June to September.

You can buy tickets at the Petrozavodskoe Agentstvo Vozdushnykh Soobshcheny(PAVS; 780 044, international flights 765 901; ul Antikaynena 20; 8am-8pm Mon-Sat, 8am-6pm Sun).
