Land

Bus

From the bus station(238 771; ul 23-y Gvardeyskoy Divizii 13) there's a bus to Veliky Ustyug (R460, 11½ hours) at 8am daily.

Train

From the station(237 241; pl 60-letia Oktyabrya 2), two or three trains daily run to Moscow (R1087 to R1331, 21 to 24 hours) via Vologda (R615 to R820, 14 to 15 hours) and Yaroslavl (R778 to R1038, 18 to 20 hours). There's one train daily each to St Petersburg (R1071 to R1312, 26 hours) and Kotlas (R707 to R866, 19 hours), and a train on odd dates (daily during some summer periods) to Murmansk (R997 to R1222, 30 hours) via Kem (R510 to R655, 16 hours).

There's a convenient train ticket desk (9am-2pm & 3-5pm Mon-Fri) in the Hotel Dvina.

Air

Talagi airport(ARH; 211 560), 12km northeast of the centre, has flights by Aeroflot-Nord (655 776; Pomorskaya ul 7; 9am-7pm Mon-Fri, 10am-5pm Sat & Sun) to/from Moscow Sheremet- yevo (R4900 one-way, 1¾ hours, two or three daily), Murmansk (R3950, two hours, five or six a week), Kotlas (R2300, 1½ hours, Monday to Friday), the Solovetsky Islands (R1860, one hour, Monday and Friday, plus Sunday from mid-June to mid- September), Petrozavodsk (R3600, one hour, Sundays from about June to September) and Tromsø, Norway (US$230, five hours, Monday, Wednesday and Friday), via Murmansk. Pulkovo(635 898; ground fl, pl Lenina 4; 10am-3pm Mon-Fri) flies to/from St Petersburg (R4200, 1½ hours, one or two daily).

Further Solovetsky Islands flights (R1860, one hour) go on Wednesday, plus Monday and Friday from June to October, in small planes from Vaskovo airport(450 926), 20km south of the city centre.

You can also buy air tickets at the helpful ticket desk (9am-2pm & 3-5pm Mon-Fri) in the foyer of the Hotel Dvina and atTsAVS (238 098; Voskresenskaya ul 116; 9am-7pm Mon-Fri, 10am-5pm Sat & Sun).
