This neat church is home to the ‘miraculous’ Icon of St Nicholas, which apparently took the Biblical command ‘heal thyself’ to heart: believers allege the icon restored itself on a May night in 1994. The church is in Kukisvumchorr (‘25km’): buses 1, 12, 16 and 105 (R12) run here from pr Lenina. Ask the driver to let you off.
Everything from classical concerts to Miss Kirovsk pageants are held in this impressive, pastel-yellow building next to the pool.
From the church, walk 1.5km to a turn-off on the left and then another 1.7km from there to arrive at Russia’s northernmost botanical gardens. Special hothouses nurture tropical plants and a 2km summer-only trail climbs to the alpine tundra. Keep in mind: bears are rare, but they are around.
