Top Photography Sites of Moscow – Part 4 - Novodevichy Convent and Cemetery
Blog: American in Russia - 15 February 2010
Novodevichy Convent, also known as the Bogoroditse-Smolensky Monastery, is probably the the most well-known convent in Moscow. Its name, is sometimes translated as the New Maidens' Monastery, was named to differ it from the ancient maiden’s church in the Moscow Kremlin Unlike other Moscow convents and monasteries, this convent has remained virtually intact since the 1600s, so what you see here truly is looking into the past. In 2004, this convent was proclaimed to be an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Spokoyno Noche Moscow!
Blog: Leave Me Here - 14 February 2010
Just when they cleared the ice on the sidewalk near home, when I made some good friends, was shown the hidden cafes, and got the lab to scan my film correctly, my month in Moscow comes to an end. The random chain of events that led me here definitely didn’t prepare me for the bitter cold [...]

Top Photography Sites of Moscow – Part Two – State Historical Museum and Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts
Blog: American in Russia - 7 February 2010
Few places in the world today are able to say that they hold such splendid examples of world class museums as the city of Moscow. Not even the museums of Paris can compare with the treasures which can be found in the museums of Moscow. I never appreciated art until I came to Moscow and saw so many amazingly beautiful works of art. I also enjoy history a lot, even taught history here in Moscow awhile and to be able to see things in various museums that I would never see at home in the US, is a wonderful experience.

Not Your Babushka's Moscow
Blog: No Borders - 14 November 2009
Somerville, Mass - A friend of mine sent me this awesome video of a flash mob that took place in Moscow last week. Personally, I'm not sure it counts as a flash mob if the participants practiced for two weeks beforehand, but that doesn't really matter. Check out what happened when they came together on a Saturday afternoon in a Moscow shopping mall.I love the babushka at 2:20. She doesn't know the moves, but that's not stopping her from throwing down. She's like "Communism, shmomunism.... We didn't do this back in the Soviet Union!"

I stare at the newspaper. It wasn’t me. I gawp at the television. It wasn’t me. I trawl through the internet. It wasn’t me! I listen to the radio, podcasts, and conversations on the bus. It WASN’T me! At least — I hope it wasn’t me? I didn’t know much about Asia before I scribbled [...]
