Lonely Planet review

On a quiet side street, this two-room museum – formerly the Museum of Folk Art – showcases designer matryoshki (nesting dolls) and different painting techniques. The centrepiece is a 1m-high matryoshka with 50 dolls inside. The exhibit demonstrates the history of this favourite Russian souvenir. Don’t come looking for modern-day, pop-culture-inspired dolls because the museum takes a traditionalist tack. Downstairs, an excellent souvenir shop offers a wide selection of handicrafts, including hand-painted matryoshki .
