Lonely Planet review for Synod Printing House
This is where Ivan Fyodorov reputedly produced Russia’s first printed book, The Apostle, in 1563. (You can see a statue of the man himself at nearby Starye Polya.) In 1703 the first Russian newspaper, Vedomosti, was also printed here. Up until the early 19th century, Kitay Gorod was something of a printing centre, home at the time to 26 of Moscow’s 31 bookshops.
