B1 Maximum
When the big names come to Moscow, this is where they perform. Russia’s most popular groups, from old-timers such as Mashina Vremeni to modern-day heroes such as Leningrad, all make appearances on this stage on a regular basis. Occasional acts from the USA and Europe also appear here. If they are well-known artists, you will see posters around town advertising the show.

Ikra
Its unexpected industrial location and its trendy trash-glam decor give Ikra an edge. But it’s the music that makes this quirky club so excellent. Others must agree, as Ikra was awarded the prestigious National Nightlife Award for live music in 2007. National and international acts range from Sean Lennon to Gogol Bordello.

Roadhouse
If your dog got run over by a pick-up truck, you could find some comfort at the Roadhouse Blues Bar, with down-and-out live music every night, plus cold beer and a whole menu of salty cured meats. Great fun and a friendly vibe, with people actually listening to the music. Book a table if you want to sit down.

Music Town
True to its name, Music Town books live acts seven nights a week. The bands run the gamut, from true blues to exotic ethno-jazz to raw rock and roll. You never know what you’re getting, but you’re sure to get your groove on. On Friday and Saturday there is often a second concert at midnight.

Pirogi
This vaguely hippie (but definitely hip) place is definitely out of place in posh Tretyakovsky proezd. Enter through the unmarked door in the corner of the courtyard and descend into the underground – literally and figuratively. Live music plays most nights.

A relaxed and relatively inexpensive place to hear live music. This divey basement place hosts lots of different kinds of bands – from around Europe and Russia – so check out the website in advance. Look out for free concerts on Monday nights.

Downstairs, the brassy English pub-restaurant has an excellent house-brewed bitter. Upstairs, the club gets some of the best local and foreign bands that play in Moscow.

Woodstock
Comfy couches and busy billiard tables lend this club a low-key, loungey atmosphere. Weekends feature live music, usually blues and rock.
