Ferries Across Black Sea to Russia?

Hi There
Given it seems that the ferry from Trabzon to Sochi isn't running in 2015 - unless anyone knows otherwise - does anyone know of ANY ferries leaving from ANY Black Sea Port that go to a Russian port (e.g Sochi or nNvorossiysk)?

Many thanks. Mike

Happy end of the TranSib tale! Hope it helps you choose your stops: Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Tobolsk, Ekaterinburg, Perm, Kirov etc

Happy to announce for those who've been following that I am safely back from the winter Siberia journey. This comes as a bit of a surprise: it was -30 most of the time, and, irritatingly, I don't even have a cold! nor had any of my stuff stolen in platzkart, for that matter. So the experience is not full (boringly safe)...

I have also happily completed the last part of the trip report on a GAZZILLION of Transsiberian stops I did between Irkutsk and Moscow - so happy to advice what the best…

Ferapontov Monastery, Vologda Region

Wondering if anyone knows whether it is permitted to take photos of the frescoes (with tripod, without flash of course) in the Ferapontov Monastery near Vologda?

Thanks

Buying a car in Russia

Hello!

A friend and I (both American) are thinking of flying into St. Petersburg and buying a car to drive down to Moscow, south through Volgograd and then along the Caspian Sea into Azerbaijan. Eventually we would like to go through Georgia into Turkey. We are thinking of selling the car there in Turkey, or paying to ferry it across to Bulgaria/Albania, and continue driving up through the Balkans. A couple questions:

  1. How difficult would it be to purchase a car in St. Petersburg?
  2. If we do…

Man Pupu Nyor Rocks (Маньпупунёр)

I'd love to visit the Man Pupu Nyor rock formations this summer when I am in Russia, and was wondering about getting there.

According to this website:

http://tonkosti.ru/%D0%9C%D0%B0%D0%BD%D1%8C%D0%BF%D1%83%D0%BF%D1%83%D0%BD%D1%91%D1%80

Unless going by helicopter, which I don't want to do, it says that the journey starts in Yaksh in Komi Republic (around 600 kms from Syktyvkar), then 200 km by boat, and a 40 km walk.

I'm wondering if anyone has done this trip? I have my own car and speak…

Visa for Indian applying in London

Hello,

I am a holder of an Indian passport, staying in London on a long term work visa and would be travelling to Russia during the first week of April.

I read the documents required for applying a visa and got a visa invitation letter and voucher from my airBnB host, however later on they said since India is apparently a "high immigration risk" country - the documents they issued aren't valid anymore. I am not sure what's the best way to approach this now - should I apply for the visa…

Trip Report - Ulan-Ude - Lake Baikal, Barguzin Valley, Chita - Buddhist Monasteries of Zabaikal Territory

Here is an article, from an October / November 2010 trip I made in Siberia.

I begin crossing the border into Russia from Mongolia at Kyakhta, then drive to Ulan-Ude.

After a few rest days in Ulan-Ude, I drive north to to stunning Lake Baikal, befriend two Finns in their own car and head into the sublimely beautiful Barguzin Valley.

We spend a few days driving around the valley in perfect, crisp autumn weather, then return to Ulan-Ude and drive east on the Trans-Siberian Highway to Chita.

Trans-Siberian Railway

Does anyone have any recent experience here? I'm wondering if western sanctions on Russia and the general blaming of its economic woes on the west has chilled the reception of locals towards us outlanders.

I'm considering a trip on the Trans-Sib. Moscow-Beijing, with probably some stops along the way, in the fall or May-ish in 2016. I haven't decided yet whether to go solo, with a group, or troll for a travel buddy. I've gone through the posts here and some elsewhere, but any advice or good…
