Climate of Siberia and Baikal in mid November

Hi all - i have a question. I am considering taking the Trans Siberian in mid November with a five day stop in Irkutsk for Lake Baikal. What will the climate be like at that time? Can I expect some snow and ice, or will it still be more autumnal? I must admit that I'm attached to the romantic idea of a wintery journey on the Trans Siberian, but suspect November the 15th may be too early for that. Maybe I should do it another time?

Thanks in advance, I know you guys are always amazingly helpful…

What racism could we expect.

Firstly I don't want to sound like we are expecting to be confrunted by the KKK but I have heard some bad things and just want to set my fiancés mind at rest.
We are a mixed race couple I'm white british and she is Australian of Vietnamese desent. We are planning on visiting Moscow and Saint Petersberg.
We will mostly be in tourist areas and we are not ones who will be hitting any clubbing scene hard.
We both really want to visit and enjoy what looks like a beautiful country but feel it is…

Kazan or Nizhny Novgorod: which is a better Trans-Siberian stop?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning an overland trip from Beijing to Moscow, and am trying to decide between Kazan and Nizhny Novgorod as my final stop before Moscow.

Has anyone been to both, and would strongly recommend one above the other? Or visited just one, but feel very passionate about it as a place to go? I hear a lot of buzz about NN but the pictures of Kazan suggest some really dazzling architecture.

We'll be travelling in winter and we're a pair of travellers who love winter sports, outdoor…

How long does it take for aeroflot to make the refund

Hi all,

I requested for a refund of my flight with aeroflot.

They responded very quickly that they will refund, but I have not received the refund on my credit after nearly one months.

Just like to ask how long does it usually take to receive the refund. Anyone had any experience with this before?

Thanks in advance! :)

Cheers,
Alexis

Train station rooms, in April

Hullo all,

We're going to take the Transsiberian in April, and we'd like to do it mostly through couchsurfing, but as there's always the possibility of not getting a couch, we'd like to know whether the train station sleeping rooms are an option that could be used at the last minute. Will they be available? Are they clean? If it makes any difference, we're going to stop at

Kazan
Novosibyrsk
Krasnoyarsk
Irkutsk
Ulan Ude
Khabarovsk
and Vladivostok

Heaps of immense thanks in advance!

Russia Altai to Western Mongolia

I'm thinking of trying to go from Russia to Olgii, Mongolia for a climb of Tavan Bogd next summer but unsure how to get there without my own car. I could go via Irkutsk/Ulan-Ude to Ulaan Bataar then spend way too many days in jeeps which would be painful and not cheap. But there may be a bus thru the Altai.

From Wiki:

"There is a bus from Tsagaannuur, Mongolia to Astana, Kazakhstan that passes through Altai Krai and the Altai Republic."

Where is Tsagaanuur? I put it in google maps and it…

Entering Russia overland from Belarus

Just wanted to share my experience travelling overland from Belarus to Russia. I travelled from Minsk to Moscow by train and didn't get any stamps when crossing the border, because there's no border control between Belarus and Russia. This means I didn't get an exit stamp on my Belarusian visa and no entry stamp on my Russian visa.

Turns out, this is not a problem (but I couldn't really find any definitive information about this on the web). When I exited Russia (over land) I just got an exit…

Bus from Vladivostok to Harbin (China)

While trying to find a bus from Vladivostok to Harbin (as mentioned in the LP 'Trans Siberia Express') I had a little hard time finding where exactly to get tickets for this bus, so I thought I'd share my experience.

(BTW: you could take the train, but this takes considerably longer than the bus)

We ended up buying the tickets directly at the Vladivostok Bus Station (Autovokzal) at the counter for International tickets (Counter #2) for 2400 RUB one way. This bus took us ± 12 hours (including…
