  1. New Jerusalem Monastery

    In the 17th century, Nikon, the patriarch whose reforms drove the Old Believers from the Orthodox Church, decided to show one and all that Russia deserved to be the centre of the Christian world. He did this by building a little Holy City right at home, complete with its own Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Thus, the grandiose New Jerusalem Monastery was founded in 1656 near the picturesque Istra River.

    Unlike other Moscow monasteries, this one had no military use. In WWII the retreating Germans blew it to pieces but it’s in the middle of being reconstructed. After years as a museum, the monastery is now in Orthodox hands and attracts a steady stream of worshippers. In th…
