Sighetu Marmatiei border crossing to Ukraine (by car) - Beware!

My girlfriend and I just returned from a wonderful 10 day trip through Romania, mostly Banat, Maramures and western Transylvania with our trust Lonely Planet guide in hand throughout.

One thing I wanted to warn people about is the small border crossing over the Tisa River from Sighetu to Ukraine. Based on the description in the LP Guide, we thought we'd pop over for the afternoon to have some lunch, buy some vodka, then return. What an adventure!

Leaving Romania is fine, but upon entering…

Budapest to Bucharest by train (via Transylvania)

We are planning on travelling from the UK to Bucharest by train in March, and have just booked a few legs of the journey.

However, for the Budapest to Bucharest leg, I have come across some conflicting information.

I read on Seat61 and some other websites that the 'Ister' night train stopped at Sibiu and Brasov, so we were planning on spending a couple of days in each place. However, when trying to search for the tickets to Sibiu on the Hungarian train website, it seems to say that this…

Which car to rent for winter in Romania?

Hi everybody,

I'm planning to spend a few days in Romania (27 to 31 December) with some friends,
we are landing in Cluj-Napoca and renting a car there to see the surroundings.

We have a problem: we can't decide which car suits most to our needs.
Is it necessary to have a 4x4 in Transilvania in winter or a Fiat Panda could do it?

Should be mentioned that we have a long experience of driving on bad tracks and/or snow, then we could think of using a normal car for most of the "feasible"…

Curtea de Argeş and Poienari Fortress in the winter

Hello all,

I am interested in traveling to Romania around late December and early January. While I have heard good things about Curtea de Argeş and Poienari Fortress, I have heard that these places are difficult to visit during the wintertime. (I have heard, for example, that the Transfăgărășan is closed during the winter.) Is it worthwhile to travel to them around the time I intend to be in Romania? Thanks.

Romanian travel timeline

I was wondering how long it should take to see Oradea, Cluj/Klausenburg, Sighişoara, Braşov, Bran, Sinaia, Bucuresti and Suceava and the painted Moldova churches. I only want to see historic attractions inc. museums, and maybe some of the beautiful nature, no hiking or skiing. I am not in a hurry and want to keep a fairly leisurely pace.
Thanks alot for any help you can provide.

Bukovina

I am currently in Brasov and heading for Bukovina in a day or 2. What are some of the unmissable sights in the area and what town do I head for from Brasov? Sorry but I cannot get a stable connection with my laptop in Romania. Maybe just bad luck. Some detailed information of main towns and main sights of Bukovina would be great.

Also, how much is the visa for Moldova for Australians? LP Europe 2013 states that Australians need a visa but not an invitation. But the Moldova website says…

Trip report: Bucharest

Having just come back a few observations

Arrival at the airport (OTP)
Small for a country of Romania's size but efficient. We found the best money changer (bank of transylvania) through the customs (downstairs in departures hall) it has a good rate that competed well with City centre changers. We took the bus to the Unirii sq which was good, 9 Lei for trip -about 45 mins. Traffic v heavy.

Travelling around city cheap on metro (4 lei for two trips), but taxis can be negotiated 15 lei across…
