Finding More than Dracula in Romania
Blog: Nomadic Matt's Travel Site - 23 August 2011
As I wandered around Sighisoara, searching for coffins, bats, vampires and human blood, I realized Romania wasn’t going to give me what I wanted – lots of cheesy Dracula tourism. I had been to Bran, Transylvania, and Bucharest and so far had encountered nothing about vampires. It was odd. The Romanians just haven’t decided to [...]

The Saturday City: Brasov
Blog: Nomadic Matt's Travel Site - 20 August 2011
I loved my visit to Romania and I found Brasov to my favorite city. I had the best time there and I found it to be a wonderful base for exploring the area. For some reason, hardly anyone visits Romania. I rarely ever saw any large groups of tourists while here. But for the travelers [...]

The Weekly Photo: A Beggar in Romania

A beggar in Brasov, Romania (What I like about this photo is the way the beggar is being ignored and in the background. In a way it could be a statement about his place in society.) ©Nomadic Matt's Travel Site. Want to save OVER $700 USD on your next trip? Get Free Travel Coupons with [...]

Twilight in Brasov – Mongol Rally
Blog: Ottsworld - 5 August 2011
I must admit, the only thing I really knew about Romania when we blew threw the old abandoned border structure on the highway was that it was the homeland of Nadia Comaneci the gymnast. However I quickly learned that I was entering the world of Count Dracula thanks to numerous signs, and hotel names. I’m [...]

Day 204: A world cycler in spooky Transylvania
Blog: Diaries of a Vagabonding Couple - 4 September 2010
Transylvania, the birthplace of spooky legends Super excited tonight! Just met Yuji at our hostel in Brasov. He's the first traveler we've met who's on a hellova journey - around the world by bicycle. Exactly like Yusuke's adventure, the Japanese traveler who cycled around the world for 7 years and wrote a book that eventually inspired us to quit our jobs to travel. Clock tower watches over

Steering wheel death grips and driving in Romania
Blog: The Adventures of D - 12 May 2010
Remember, 10 and 2, D. 10 and 2. And, go slowly. Very, very slowly. Car packed with the three Aussies, I pulled out into Brasov's traffic. Oh. My. God. I hope we don't die. I hope I don't kill anyone. I hope I don't hurt this car because I really, really cannot afford to lose the 400 Euro deposit. My shoulders were tight and nearly touching my ears. My arms were locked straight out.

Three Aussies and an American
Blog: The Adventures of D - 10 May 2010
I was laying in bed Saturday morning when I met Chris, a shaggy brown-haired, adorably cute Aussie. I was exhausted -- the night before Benjamin, Tomym and I headed out with Scott and Heidi (my friends from Budapest), along with a group of four who had rented a car for the night to get out of Bucharest.

A BRIEF intermission: Chasing spring … two months in
Blog: The Adventures of D - 7 May 2010
A year ago, when I lived in Atlanta, I remember marveling at the city's sheer gorgeousness with the changing of the season. The pink flowers that would sprout from the winding trees. The bright green grass that would pop up overnight.

“Black Out” in Brasov
Blog: The Adventures of D - 6 May 2010
It was a rainy Saturday afternoon in Brasov. Benjamin, Tommy and I went into square with the intention to buy wood for an afternoon barbecue (wood was a bus ride away), but ended up just eating our way through the city. We sat together, enjoying our "fast food" sandwiches when we saw the neon sign blinking in a window above our heads: "Legal Weed." We looked at each other. Weed was legal in Romania??? We needed to investigate further. The three of us went upstairs to the "spice shop" to ask questions. No, weed was not legal. BUT, this ... spice concoction ...

Hello, Travel Bliss
Blog: The Adventures of D - 4 May 2010
I knew as soon as I boarded the train for Brasov, Romania from Budapest, I was going to get out of my funk. I arrived way too early in the morning for anyone to be awake at Kismet Dao. The overnight train dropped me in Brasov at 7:30 a.m. I exited the station and was greeted with more rain, but I didn't mind. I had a good feeling.

D vs Budapest: The down and dirty recap
Blog: The Adventures of D - 28 April 2010
I departed Madrid with such apprehension. I wanted to stay, but knew it was time to head out and keep traveling. Budapest was the destination, but I wasn’t too excited, despite the marvelous things I have heard about it. I loved being with my new friends, and heading to Budapest meant a departure from my [...]

Well today pretty much just resolved around the derby for me. I was frantically trying to find somewhere showing the game in the city centre but trying to find a bar one is hard work in Chisinau, never mind one actually showing it. I was getting desperate as it got closer and closer to KO [...]

My plans for today have gone south. I was hoping to hang around the hostel all day and plan what happens after Bucharest until I get my night bus to Chisinau tonight. But alas today just happens to be their biannual ‘big clean’ day where they shut the entire hostel. That means I’m on the [...]

I watched the Coen Brother’s ‘Burn After Reading’ late last night in the hostel. Although it had mixed reviews with many critics thinking it should be burned before watching, I thought it was alright. As always 2 paragraphs or so of my thoughts on the last flick I took-in are available on the Flixter link. [...]

I managed to watch the rest of ‘Match Point’ in the end. Review available by following the Flixter link to your right (and down). This day has just turned into a long and painful one. My bus to Brasov was at 14:35 (and takes about 3 hours) and I was at the station before 14:00 [...]
