Ti Fred
No culinary acrobatics in this few-frills haunt near the Temple du Colosse, just keep-the-faith Creole staples and pizzas at puny prices. Eat in or take away.

Snack Chez Louiso
Chez Louiso is a casual open-air eatery overlooking the harbour. The menu is limited to a couple of daily specials, but they're well prepared and sizzling-hot value.

Restaurant des Cascades
A local and tourist favourite, this ramshackle beach restaurant in a lovely coconut grove bursts to the seams on weekends. It serves fresh fish and Creole dishes as well as sandwiches and a lovely palm-hearts salad. The lunch buffet (€12) served on weekdays is brilliant value. Nab a seat if it's not too busy, otherwise take your order to go and enjoy it in a quieter spot near the beach.

Le Sri Lankai
This modest eatery whips out South Indian dishes and a few vegetarian options at prices that won't make you flinch. It's across the road from the Temple du Petit Bazar.

Les Letchis
Eastern Réunion's best-kept secret, Les Letchis boasts a fantastic location in a luxuriant garden by the Rivière des Marsouins. The menu is an ode to Creole classics and 'riverfood'; standouts include carri bichiques and carri canard fumé (smoked duck curry). If you want to explore new culinary territories, try carri chevaquines (a curry made from small freshwater prawns) or carri anguilles (eel curry). Reservations are advised.

Le Régal' Est
Locals rave about this hip venture located upstairs in the covered market, but we found the prices inflated at dinner and the brochettes de poisson (skewered fish) a bit skimpy. Chef's bad day, maybe? The lunchtime menu (€15) is a better deal, though.

Le Beauvallon
Le Beauvallon is well known to everyone in the area, not least for its location beside the mouth of the Rivière des Roches and its seasonal, scrumptious carri bichiques. On the flipside, the vast dining room doesn't contain one whit of soul or character.

Le Beau Rivage
True to its name ('the beautiful shore'), Le Beau Rivage boasts a fantastic location – it's on the seafront, beside the church ruins in Champ-Borne (ask for a table near the windows). The cuisine is predominantly Chinese.
