Palais des Fromages
This unassuming dairy farm on the outskirts of Bourg-Murat has a lot to answer for – namely our raging addiction to fromage crémeux au combava (creamy goat cheese flavoured with combava), best enjoyed at a picnic table in the cryptomeria forest nearby. Also concocts waffles on Sunday.

Maison du Volcan
Everything you need to know about Piton de la Fournaise and volcanoes in general should become clear at the excellent Maison du Volcan. Unfortunately, most of the information is in French, but some interactive displays are in English and the videos of eruptions are self-explanatory. There's a 40-minute film on the 2007 eruption and a shorter one on the 2010 eruption.

Le QG
What do you get if you cross a Réunionnais chef (André), a Senegalese waiter (Abdou) and a snug dining room? The QG! If the thought of rougaille zandouille (sausage stew Creole-style) or carri poulet (chicken curry) exquisitely cooked in the hearth doesn't make you dribble then you've started pushing up daisies. Also serves breakfast.

The set menu is a culinary feast revolving around duck preparations and organic vegetables. A crème brûlée à la vanille (cream pie with a caramelised topping and flavoured with vanilla) will finish you off sweetly.
