  1. A

    Bali Buddha

A local institution, Bali Buddha has a mostly veggie cafe with a long list of healthy foods upstairs and a health-food store and bakery downstairs (the blueberry muffins are mighty fine). Raw foodists and vegans will find much to like here – but so will carnivores and those simply in search of tasty food and drink. The bulletin board out front is a community resource.

  2. B

    Café Lotus

A meal at this Ubud veteran, overlooking the lotus pond at Pura Taman Saraswati, is a relaxing treat for many when they first arrive in Ubud. The menu features well-prepared Western and Indonesian fare. Paying extra for front-row seats for dance performances at Pura Taman Saraswati is not worth it, the dancers are still tiny.

  3. C

    Kafe

Kafe has an organic menu great for veggie grazing or just having a coffee, juice or house-made natural soft drink. Breakfasts are healthy while lunch meals feature excellent salads and burritos, with many raw items. One of the places to meet in Ubud, it's always busy.

  4. D

    Stiff Chili

Apart from the evocative name, this beachside cafe has fine views through its near lack of walls. Pizza and pasta head the surprisingly ambitious menu.

    Custom House

Sir Terence Conran’s recently opened gourmet complex is housed in the old ferry terminal, where boats used to embark for Sweden. As well as a small deli, there are three appealing upscale (or should that be ‘Yuppiescale’?) restaurants here. At Bacino the menu is contemporary but authentic Italian, with dishes including langoustine (shrimp) with pumpkin risotto or fillet of halibut with basil, courgette and almond cream. Ebisu serves what is for Copenhagen an unusually wide range of Japanese dishes, while the Grill Bar apes a more casual, upmarket New York steak joint. The food and service varies from excellent to so-so but, as you’d expect, the décor is smooth and…

  6. F

    Devilicious

Jl Goutama is a delightful street for a stroll and this cafe is one of the reasons why. Cajun, grilled steaks, pasta and good Indonesian headline at this tasty and attractive cafe. Be sure to ask for your food 'spicy'.

  7. G

    Ozone Café

This popular travellers' gathering spot has more character than every other place in east Bali combined. Slogans cover the walls, including this example from a wall of dating advice: 'Men are like chocolate, first they are sweet but then they make stomach fat.' Ozone has pizza and live music, sometimes by patrons.

  8. H

    Bodega

This recently renamed and re-invigorated DJ bar-cafe-restaurant beside the walls of Assistens Kirkegård is one of the hot spots in this hottest of neighbourhoods. The fresh-thinking fusion kitchen is accomplished and soul, funk and R&B grooves are spun on Friday and Saturday nights.

  9. I

    Tropis Club

The long menu at this beachside place is right out of the traveller rulebook: there's Indo, Western, sandwiches and wood-fired pizza. Choose a table under the soaring roof or out along the beach walkway. Sunset specials include cheap Bintang.

  10. J

    Bonsai Cafe

Order from a long list of beach-cafe standards while chilling in comfy and shady wicker chairs. Then wander inland for a surprise: hundreds of the cafe's namesake plants growing small in a rather sensational formal garden.

  12. K

    Tutmak Café

The breezy multilevel location here, facing both Jl Dewi Sita and the football field, is a popular place for a refreshing drink or a meal. Local comers on the make huddle around their laptops plotting their next move; others enjoy long-planned rendezvous.

  13. L

    Apropos

One of the leading lights of this rejuvenated cafe square, Apropos serves a free-roaming menu that includes lobster rolls, tandoori salmon and New York cheesecake. There’s plenty of outdoor seating during summer.

  14. M

    Lumut

This gracious 2nd-floor open-air cafe is set back from the road. The emphasis is on fresh seafood and Indonesian fare. Service is stylish and should be: part of the complex is a high-end housewares store.

  15. N

    Pussy Galore’s Flying Circus

This Sankt Hans Torv pioneer remains popular, thanks to a great location on the quarter’s most buzzing square, with plenty of outdoor tables and a clever, good-value fusion menu.

  16. O

    Beach Café

Brings a bit of Med style to the Sanur beach cliché of palm fronds and plastic chairs. Zone out on wicker sofas or hang on a low cushion on the sand. Enjoy salads and seafood.

  17. P

    Café Batu Jimbar

This popular top-end cafe has a large wooden patio out front and an airy dining room. The baked goods on display compete for attention with the ice-cream case. As well as having the best banana smoothie in Bali, the menu has pricey Indonesian classics and standards like sandwiches.

  18. Q

    Bio Mio

Once a BOSCH store (note the neon sign), this salubrious designer canteen is one of only two 100% organic restaurants in Denmark.

  19. R

    Viva

This unique restaurant, on board a ship moored beside Langebro, has an inventive menu of tapas-sized, modern European dishes.

  20. S

    Zanzibar

Head right to the second level looking out over the shade trees to the surf. The menu is a typical mix of Indo, pasta, sandwiches and decent thin-crust pizzas, but that's not your priority – get a large table with a group and enjoy the sunset views.

  21. T

    Seaside

The curving sweep of seating at this sleek place provides beach views for one and all. Upstairs, there's a vast patio with oodles of tables for counting stars after the sun goes down. Seafood and meat dishes come with a touch of style.

  23. U

    Rainbow Cafe

Join generations of Kuta denizens quaffing the afternoon away. The vibe at this deeply shaded spot has changed little since people said things like 'I grok that, man'. Many current customers are the offspring of backpackers who met at adjoining tables.

  24. V

    Nyoman's Beer Garden

Best of the bunch just outside the gates. There's a party atmosphere at the tables inside and out. The menu cuts a broad swathe: Asian, pasta, pizza, burgers and, yes, schnitzel. Order the lobster in advance and it comes with the owner's secret – and tasty – sauce.

  25. W

    Kori Restaurant & Bar

Kori's tables are scattered about a series of gardens and ponds. Definitely a few cuts above its very casual neighbours, this is the place to linger over a gin and tonic and a steak. Enjoy a secluded rendezvous in the flower-bedecked nooks out back. Some nights there's live acoustic music.

  26. Cafe Teras Lempuna

North of the temple, this indoor/outdoor cafe is stylish and modern. The menu ranges from burgers to Japanese, and the coffee, tea and juices refresh no matter what the temperature. When it's sunny, enjoy the inviting covered patio; when it's cool, put on the heat with the hot chilli soup.

  27. X

    Balcony

The Balcony has a breezy tropical design and sits above the din of Jl Benesari below. Get ready for the day with a long menu of eggs and pancakes. At night it's sort of upscale surfer: pasta, grilled meats and a few Indo classics. It's all nicely done and the perfect place to take your new hook-up from 5am.
