Bangladeshi Restaurants

  1. Quality Sweets & Restaurant

The Quality Sweets & Restaurant is overflowing with both character and drool inspiring food. It’s tucked down a little alley off the main drag – there’s no exterior English sign, but there is a small sign in English beside the interior door. The dhal here is especially good and much thicker than is normal in Bangladesh. Its sweet selection is deserving of the name.

    Gulshan Plaza Restaurant

Cheap and basic workman’s restaurant that has all your Bangladeshi favourites, as well as kebabs and roast chickens – all of which are near enough perfect. The boss is English-speaking.

  3. B

    Ahar Restaurant

At night it’s damn near impossible to miss this flashing Christmas tree of a restaurant. During the day it’s marginally more subtle, but even so the bright lights, bright pink interior and bright balloons are obviously of great appeal to the girls of Rangpur as this seems to be the only restaurant in the entire country where female diners outnumber male. The staff proudly announce that they can make ‘anything’, though they mean anything Bangladeshi. Still, the biryani is well worth the trip.

    Ali's Tandoori Curry House

There aren't many tables at Ali's, and the kitchen is pretty much in the middle of the room, but it all adds to the atmosphere. Ali is from Bangladesh, and he uses a lot of Bangladeshi techniques in his cooking. Feel free to specify exactly how hot you want your curry cooked (mild to molten magma), peruse the wine list then kick back into a low-key beachy evening.

  5. D

    Boaishaki Restaurant

This place is so popular it’s just silly, but as normal the locals know best. As well as delectable curries there are a few harder to come by dishes such as biryani. If the staff take a shine to you then you might find yourself leaving with a free red rose, and a cha or two better off.

  6. E

    Kolapata

This modest restaurant serves up excellent Bangladeshi cuisine. Try the haleem (lamb with lentils and spices) and the sarisha elish (fish cooked with mustard seed, onion and green chilli).

  7. F

    Bonanza Food Plus

You certainly won’t get sloppy dhal and stringy chicken at this sophisticated but well-priced restaurant. Many consider it to be the finest eating establishment in the city and it is, without doubt, the place to experience everything good about Bangladeshi food.

  8. G

    Mayer Doa Restaurant

Next to the Hotel Sufia, the menu of the Mayer Doa advertises simple Bangladeshi dishes, but the tastes the cooks produce are far from simple. The chefs recommend the fish (Tk 40). The red-and-green painted sign is in Bengali only.

    Bangla Büfé

This place started up by a Bangladeshi expatriate has as authentic samosas (390Ft), chicken and lamb biryani (790Ft to 1050Ft) and dhal (490Ft) as you’ll find in Budapest. It’s simple but the food is very tasty indeed.

  10. I

    Mia Fazil Restaurant

One of tonnes of identical Bengali restaurants. This one reserves a warm welcome for foreigners and always makes room for you, no matter how busy (and it normally is). Look for the yellow Bengali sign.

    Balaka

Long-established Bangladeshi restaurant with both standard choices and more inspiring discoveries − all delicious and seasoned with herbs the owners grow themselves. There's an interesting selection of fish cooked in the tandoor, and various cheap lunch and early dining deals.

  13. K

    Agra Hotel & Restaurant

As full of character as it is full of characters, this popular restaurant, tucked away in a corner, won’t give you much privacy with its cramped quarters, but will give you great food.

  14. New Hotel

The best Bangladeshi restaurant in the town centre by far, New Hotel’s restaurant is very popular and open almost till midnight. There are vegetarian dishes here, too.

The Saidpur Restaurant is a decent place to stuff your gullet with all manner of meat and veg curries, attracting the normal hordes of locals and starers.

Ignore the misleading name; this isn’t a place to sleep but rather a place to indulge in sensational Bangladeshi food in a classy but comfortable atmosphere.

Real Bangladeshi food in atypically clean surrounds. The curries are delectable and the naan is piping-hot perfection.

This is the most popular restaurant in town on account of its delicious curries, biryanis and Chinese meals.

  23. R

    Cafe Bangla

Dining in the famous curry houses of Brick Lane is inevitably more about the experience than the food. Amongst the hordes of practically interchangeable restaurants, this one stands out for its murals of scantily clad women riding dragons, alongside a tribute to Princess Di.
