Lonely Planet review for Gold Souq
This pageant of glorious design and spectacular craftsmanship is fun to see even without the intention to buy. The souq comes alive later in the evening, especially before a holiday, when men traditionally express the value of their relationships through buying 22kt gold bangles, or a 'set' comprised of earrings, necklace and bracelet for the women in their family.
Qatari bridal jewellery can cost thousands, but sometimes pieces can be traded back after the wedding for something more readily usable, or even just for cash.

Buying Gold in Qatar
shadya recommends this,
One can also purchase gold toles in the Gold Souk. I would highly recommend getting quotes from 2 to 3 places as the charges vary greatly. Toles are common in Qatar, be sure to buy from a qualified dealer. Swiss bars can be purchased, but difficult in quantities of a half kilo or more. We saw swiss bars in the gold souk but they do not carry them in any kind of quantity. They also ask premium prices for swiss bars. The toles we purchased came from a subsidiary of the makers of Swiss bars. Bring cash, and be sure you understand what the true price of the gold is and what the administrative fees are. The difference can save you 600 to 1000 QR.

worthwhile if looking to buy gold
thydzik recommends this,
The gold 'souq' is mainly a main street with brick and mortar stores on either side. There is a large range consisting mostly of Arabic and Indian styles, but plain simple styles are easy to find as well.
Shop around and be prepared to bargain. I did have difficulty buying anything over 18k. Sizing can be changed while you wait.
If you are looking for inexpensive gold, try Dubai Gold Souq and even Dubai Airport.
