Situated quite literally at the puerta (door) of Puerta de Tierra, the Caribe was the first Hilton hotel outside mainland America. Constructed in 1949 after an architectural competition had chosen a utilitarian modern design drawn up by a local firm, the hotel played host to numerous celebrities throughout the 1950s and ’60s. Showing its age a bit of late, the Caribe has undergone some long-awaited renovations though reviews remain mixed. There’s good beach access and Old San Juan is a not unpleasant 30-minute walk away.
