JUNE 10, 2003 | OAKLAND, CA, USA
Lonely Planet, the world's leading travel content provider, today announced that its website, lonelyplanet.com, was a repeat double winner at last week's 7th annual Webby Awards, held in San Francisco. Like last year, Lonely Planet's website took home awards in the Best Travel Website of the Year and People's Voice categories.
Additional nominees in the travel category were New York Times Travel, IgoUgo and Joe Sent Me, and SeatGuru.com.
The Webby Awards, often described as the "Oscars™ of the Internet," recognize outstanding achievement for the Web in content, quality, and experience in 30 different categories including film, travel, news and TV. The Webby Award nominees were selected and voted on by members of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. The general public determines the People's Voice award.
The International Academy of Digital Arts (IADA) founded in 1998, is an organization with over 420 members, including David Bowie, Bjork, Matt Groening, Po Bronson and Larry Ellison. Members of the IADA also include writers, producers and editors from companies such as The New York Times, NBC, Forbes, Food Network, Fast Company, San Francisco Chronicle and Time Magazine.
Established in 1994, lonelyplanet.com has a loyal following, resulting in more than 2.8 million visits each month. Visitors to the site can shop for Lonely Planet products, exchange travel advice and opinions, research over 350 international destinations, get briefed on worldwide news events and travel issues, and read tales from on the road and off the beaten track.
