Lonely Planet New Orleans

MARCH 14, 2003 | LONDON, UK
Lonely Planet New Orleans is the perfect companion when visiting the city whose unofficial state motto is 'Laissez les bons temps rouler' and the good times certainly do roll in New Orleans. The Crescent City has become the epicentre for many a musical influence and talent, from the famous Jazz pianist Jelly Roll Morton, to Blues guitarist Snooks Eaglin, to Irma Thomas, the 'Soul Queen of New Orleans'.

'New Orleans wouldn't be such an important place for music if music weren't so important to New Orleans.New Orleanians use music the same way they do a good pepper sauce - they pour it over everything.' (p 25)

New Orleans' two most highly acclaimed spectacles attest to it - Mardi Gras in March and the Jazz Fest at the end of April. Lonely Planet New Orleans has a special 16-page section on the Carnival (Pg 48), an eight-page section on New Orleans Musical Heritage (Pg 25 - 32) and a special boxed text on the Jazz & Heritage festival (Pg 55), which distils the city's culture into two intense weekends.

Lonely Planet New Orleans also includes:

  • Information on eating New Orleans specialities like a 'mudbug' and where to get your best Dixie beer (pg 121)
  • Day trips and longer excursions to swamps, bayous and Cajun Country (pg 159)
  • Advice on the best shops to purchase collector records, musical instruments, vintage clothing and voodoo memorabilia (pg 150)
  • 14 detailed maps so you can find Bourbon St - 'the pulse of the city'.

New Orleans has spirit, mystery, history and a unique cultural mix that combines to produce a city you can't help but love.

Also out is New Orleans Condensed (Edition 1) in April 2003, a compact guide for people whose time is limited.
