OCTOBER 31, 2006
What do Antarctica, Brooklyn, Turkmenistan and Northern Ireland have in common? They are all tipped as the must-see places for 2007. Forget about the tried-and-tested beach resorts or the destinations you know so well, and get the motivation to do something out-of-the-ordinary.
The second edition of annual title, Lonely Planet Bluelist: The Best in Travel 2007, is designed to kick start your imagination. Packed full of ideas about new places to visit and interesting and unique experiences you can have when you’re there, it will get you thinking differently about travel.
Lonely Planet Bluelist 2007 is split into five chapters, with stunning images and an easy-to-read magazine style throughout. The book includes the 11 favourite countries of Lonely Planet travellers, 40 bluelists, from the quirky, the classic and the eccentric to the truly inspirational, a chapter about Dark Tourism, and the 30 places Lonely Planet recommends for 2007.
Tom Hall, Lonely Planet’s Travel Information Manager, said: “Lonely Planet Bluelist 2007 is all about seeing travel in a new light and exploring what makes the destinations you visit so special. It’s for people who are passionate about travelling and seeing the world, and who want to have unique experiences. Lonely Planet Bluelist 2007 is a snapshot of the best in travel in the coming year. The lists are not set in stone, they are intended to inspire and encourage debate.”
Lonely Planet Bluelist 2007 incorporates the knowledge of Lonely Planet's authors, staff and independent travellers. The book includes bluelists from Lonely Planet's online travel community, submitted at www.lonelyplanet.com/bluelist which has become such a popular part of the site that its now a permanent feature. So far 4000 travellers have posted their Bluelists and rated and commented on other travellers’ lists.
The people who submitted the best bluelists last year won the chance to go on the road with a Lonely Planet author to Shanghai, and their winning lists are featured in this year’s book. Due to the popularity of last year’s competition Lonely Planet is again offering this fantastic prize again this year, and sending four lucky aspiring travel writers on the road in Marrakesh with an author to get an inside view on how one of the world’s most desirable jobs is carried out. Their list will also be integrated into the 2008 edition of Lonely Planet Bluelist.
