Frequent buses (281 322 546) go to Faro (€3, one hour, 12/seven daily weekdays/weekends), via Olhão, and Vila Real (€2.85, 40 minutes). Buses also go to Lisbon (€17, five hours) and Huelva (Spain; €6.50, two hours, twice daily), with connections to Seville (€12, three hours).

Trains run daily to Faro (€2.25, 40 minutes, 12 daily) and Vila Real (€1.60, 35 minutes). A tourist train starts from Praça da Republica and visits the main sights (€3, 40 minutes, hourly 10am to 7pm September to May, to 8pm in June and to midnight in July and August).

Cheap local car-rental agencies include Mudarent (281 326 815; Rua da Silva 18d). Lorisrent (281 325 203, 964 079 233; Rua da Galeria 9a; 9.30am-1.30pm & 3-6.30pm Mon-Sat) charges €4/15 per day for a mountain bike/scooter. There’s also Rent a Bike (bikes €6 per day) and Sport Nautica (281 324 943; Rua Jacques Pessoa 26; bikes per day €5).

Taxis (281 321 544, 281 325 746) gather near the cinema on Rua Dr Marcelino Franco.
